National Trust - Head of Internal Communications
Europe’s biggest conservation charity is looking for a new Head of Internal Communications. Leading a high-performing team in a vibrant, ambitious organisation, you’ll set the strategy and the tone for all of our internal communications. You’ll inspire colleagues and volunteers, and exemplify our values. And you’ll cut through noise, helping a busy organisation focus on the right things at the right time.
You’ll be as passionate about great internal communications as we are about the places we care for.

What it's like to work here

We’re bigger than you might think! We’ve got passionate people in all our teams, and we’ve got big ambitions for history, nature and beauty. We’re for ever, for everyone and we want everyone to feel welcome, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful to them.
Your contractual location will be our head office in Swindon, however there will be an opportunity to explore and agree remote working arrangements which strike the right balance for you and the Trust. The role will involve travel to properties or regional hubs to meet with stakeholders and to carry out work.

What you'll be doing

As the Head of Internal Communications, you’ll be an expert in internal communications and staff engagement. You’ll develop and lead the National Trust’s internal communications strategy, working as a partner to the Executive team, Directors of Regions and Senior Managers to ensure the Trust’s strategy is effectively communicated. You'll help us to better understand the needs of our different audiences across the Trust, communicating key priorities and projects thoughtfully and with support from all the right people. You will also ensure that we get the basics right, delivering timely and appropriate information to help people do their jobs and understand the wider organisational priorities.
You’ll be managing a team of internal comms specialists and you’ll have professional leadership of a small network of internal communicators working regionally, embedding best practice across the organisation. You’ll work closely with the Head of External Communications to ensure our internal and external messaging is aligned and consistent.

Who we're looking for

You can view the full role profile for this role in the document attached. You don't need to have all the knowledge, skills and experience listed in the role profile; this is just to provide a full picture of what is possible in this role. For this position we’re looking for someone who has:
• Experience of leading internal or external communications at a senior level
• Knowledge of internal communication and staff and volunteer engagement best practice
• Experience in communicating change effectively and with empathy
• Track record of delivering internal comms with impact
• Leadership and people management skills with experience of people recruitment and development to ensure high levels of performance and aspiration
• Clear strategic thinking and planning
• Excellent copy writing, presentation, briefing and speech writing skills
• Influencing and networking skills at all levels
• Budget management experience

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.
