Organisation Overview

We are the largest UK retail and commercial financial services provider, with 26 million customers and a leading digital presence.

Our purpose is Helping Britain Prosper. We do this by creating a more sustainable and inclusive future for people and businesses, shaping finance as a force for good.

For Group Corporate Affairs, our purpose is: Delivering the best in class communications. We provide the insight, counsel and challenge our leaders need to deliver the Group’s strategic objectives and deliver best-in-class communications to our internal and external audiences.

What will you be working on throughout the internship?

You will work within the Retail Bank Business Partnering Team which is responsible for the internal and external communications strategy for the Retail Bank. Working closely with our Media Relations and Social Media teams, an intern could expect to be involved in high profile campaigns pitched to national publications and posted across the Group’s social media handles, such as Instagram, Twitter and Tik Tok to name a few.

Your job would be to ensure these communications are delivered to achieve the impact expected, while providing valuable input and fresh ideas to support the direction of these campaigns through to delivery.

At the same time, the Retail Bank Business Partnering team also manages a retained Consumer PR agency and works with a number of other production agencies, offering more chances to be involved in innovative communications which shape the future of Bank's retail business.

Furthermore, the team acts as strategic counsel to senior stakeholders across the Retail Bank – from the community banks and customer service, right through to marketing and products -  ensuring key messages are delivered to the right audiences both internally and externally.

The teams unique position in the Group provides a fantastic opportunity for an Intern to build experience in a fast paced communications role. The placement would be structured in such a way to give them insight into the huge amount of work the team does. This would include:

  • General oversight and management of consumer PR activity already which will include working with both our agency as well as in-house media and social teams to deliver integrated communications campaigns externally.
  • First-hand involvement in one of a number of creative campaigns we have planned in Summer 2022, including pieces related to student accounts, banking fraud and new product launches.
  • Taking the lead in creative sessions, thinking of new ways we can communicate our key messages to external and internal stakeholders.
  • Being on hand to support the media team with queries from journalists at well-known national publications, working closely with the business to source answers and providing guidance on how we should be responding.
  • Supporting the Social team with content planning, ensuring all of the Group’s handles across platforms are being utilised for maximum benefit.

Depending on the duration of the placement there may also be opportunity to be involved in a broader range of activities that reflect the overall remit of the team.

What skills or experience are essential for your intern to have?
